The next house we visited on our Open house tour was the Garden house. Garden House is a home, studio and gallery under a stepped roof planted with various succulents, designed for and in association with Whitaker Malem. We had a chat with Whitaker Malem, the artist & costume-maker duo behind works by Allen Jones, fashion designers Hussein Chalayan & Alexander McQueen and numerous film costumes including Batman, Captain America & Wonder Woman, and they are one very interesting duo!
The Garden House has been built on the site of a single-storey workshop they converted in the mid 1990's, in order to create a new home and studio which maximized the space and natural light available within their tight, north-facing site behind Victorian terraced housing in Hackney's de Beauvoir conservation area.
